Help Save Endangered Cass Gilbert
Warehouse
The former Austin, Nichols Warehouse,
located on the Williamsburg waterfront at 184 Kent Avenue, is
one of the most important industrial buildings in the city and
a great work by one of the country’s finest architects.
Designed by Cass Gilbert and built in 1913, this reinforced concrete
warehouse displays a rare and magnificent blend of industrial
functionality and high-end aesthetics. Its bold form, which carries
a bit of the Egyptian Revival style, is highlighted by the rhythm
of its tall and narrow window openings, its battered corners,
and the dramatic coved cornice that terminates each façade.
This building has few peers in the city’s and the nation’s
rich industrial heritage.
On September 20th the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated
the ANCW as a New York City Landmark. Chair Robert Tierney stated,
“This influential and innovative commercial building undoubtedly
merits recognition as a New York City landmark. I am thrilled
to add it to our roster.” Click here

in the clear? No! The owner of the building has a vigorous ongoing
campaign to repeal the building’s designation and Councilmember
David Yassky remains opposed to the designation despite the outpouring
of positive support from community members. We need your help!
Please email
your councilmember to urge them to support the designation
of this building when it comes before the council in the coming
months or contact arich@hdc.org
