NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 40
CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

Sponsored by the Coalition of Concerned Preservation Voters in the 40th District

10. We now invite you to share any additional ideas or concerns that you may have relating to preservation and development.

Gordon: Create an “accountability taskforce” to monitor and ensure compliance with HDC.

Hopkins: N/A.

James: As you well know, Brooklyn’s 40th Council District has always had a large number of buildings that are low-to-medium rise. However, in recent years, there has been a steady increase in out-of-context, high density developments that are destroying the physical beauty and intimacy of our community. As a result, many area homeowners have raised questions about what can be done to protect the scale and character of our neighborhoods. In response to these concerns, I would like to partner your organizations and others to find some answers to this dilemma, which could ultimately result in a rezoning or more contextual zoning districts with the 40th Council District.

McNally: We are fortunate to have so many striking and varied examples of 19th and early 20th century architecture within this Councilmanic district – stately Victorian residences on tree-lined streets, elegant limestone and brick rowhouses, the Loews Kings Theatre, the Dutch Reformed Church, Erasmus Hall High School. They reflect the architectural traditions and history of our area. As an elected official, I will use the means of my office to ensure that these historic structures are preserved for other generations, so that they too many live, work, be entertained within, and study these architectural treasures.

Razvi: It is difficult for a home owner to turn down mega offer for their Victorian home. We must continue to act in concert to create more attractive options for that homeowner.

Schiffman: N/A

Sharpe: While I understand the need for affordable housing, it should not be done at the expense of destroying our historic districts. We must be creative in finding a way to achieve both.

Tulloch: N/A
