CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

Voters in the 40th District
5. Would you support downzoning or contextual
zoning in R-6 zoned areas (or other areas zoned out of context
with the surrounding neighborhood) that would preserve the historic
character of the neighborhoods?
Gordon: Yes.
Hopkins: Certainly.
James: Yes, I would support downzoning
or contextual zoning in R-6 zoned areas, and other areas that
are zoned in a way that is out of context with the surrounding
neighborhoods throughout the City.
McNally: I firmly support downzoning
and/or contextual zoning as a means of preserving the historic
and architectural characteristics of neighborhoods.
Razvi: Yes, too many of our neighborhoods
are threatened with losing their unique character as things currently
stand. Down zoning and contextual zoning should be implemented
to create harmony to replace the existing cacophony.
Schiffman: This question is very
relevant to what is happening in many of the neighborhoods in
Flatbush where there are currently over 200 homes in jeopardy
of being demolished to make way for larger structures. The key,
of course, is to again work with all levels of government on this
issue but especially with the residents of the effected neighborhoods
to ensure that the character of these neighborhoods is kept safe.
I would also push for a comprehensive approach and not take the
position that if there is downsizing that there has to be something
given back to the LPC in exchange for the downsizing.
Sharpe: Yes.
Tulloch: Yes, I have undertaken
the initiative in CB17 and it is an issue that I am passionate
about.
