PLEASE WRITE TO THE MAYOR AND KEY CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS TO URGE THEM TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR LPC.

Dear Mayor Bloomberg:

I strongly urge you to increase the funding for the Landmarks Preservation Commission in the FY 2005 budget. The LPC is severely under-funded, and just a modest increase in the budget to this, one of the lowest-funded agencies in the City, would make a tremendous difference in its ability to protect and preserve historically significant buildings in New York City.

The LPC has less funding and a significantly smaller staff than it had many years ago, though it now has many more buildings to regulate and many more applications to process. It has only one enforcement officer for the entire city and no longer has a survey department to look for historically significant buildings that should be protected. Lack of funding prevents the LPC from moving more quickly on designations, allowing historic buildings to be lost, and precludes some designations from being considered.

Please increase the funding for LPC in the FY 2005 budget. Protecting an important part of our city's historic and cultural heritage, and our economic vitality and appeal, is dependent upon it.
