Professor Richard A. Greenwald, US Merchant Marine Academy
Garment Workers were central to Progressive Era New York. This lecture
discusses New York's garment workers, their unions and their politics;
New York communities; the role of women workers; the relationship
between workers and the state; and the emerging twentieth-century
liberalism that would find fulfillment in the New Deal.
The Pre-Conference Lectures, which
are free and open to the public, are supported in part by Speakers
in the Humanities, a program of the New York Council for the Humanities.

Conference, "Cultural Landmarks:
Controversy, Practice and Prospects" which will
be held March 5-7, 2004.
The Conference will explore the definition and protection
of New York City's cultural and historical landmarks, focusing on
the challenges and solutions. The program offers in-depth and lively
sessions with preservationists, municipal officials, architects
and historians presenting case studies on how to protect underappreciated
cultural sites.

Neighborhood at Risk: Stapleton, Staten Island
We are introducing a new section to our Web site,
entitled "Neighborhood at Risk" which will focus on a
community in New York City with historical integrity that is threatened.
This month we are focusing on Stapleton, on Staten Island, where
teardowns are endagering the area's identity as a Victorian suburb.
