The New York City Landmarks Law states that “the standing of this city as a world-class tourist center and world capital of business, culture and government cannot be maintained or enhanced by disregarding the historical and architectural heritage of the city and by countenancing the destruction of such cultural assets.” This sentiment remains as true today as when it as written in 1965, and historic preservation has been shown throughout the country to be a positive and useful tool for neighborhood revitalization – as historic districts stabilize property values, foster civic involvement and pride and enrich the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

HDC’s mission of protecting the integrity of the Landmarks Law and furthering the preservation ethic is integral to ensuring the continued success of preservation in New York City and the Friends of the Historic Districts Council provide vital support for all our programs and activities. Friends are HDC’s link to New York’s historic neighborhoods. They provide the human foundation for our advocacy efforts and are the core constituency for our educational programming.

Friends of the Historic Districts Council receive many benefits, including:

  • Free or reduced admission to educational programs throughout the year, including our annual Preservation Conference Series, neighborhood panels, and individual lectures.
  • “Friends Only” tours and parties with other preservation enthusiasts like you.
  • Technical and advocacy support from HDC on preservation issues that are meaningful to you. Simply pick up the phone and call us with your concerns!
  • Recognition in our newsletter District Lines, program books, and the annual report.
