State Acts to preserve John Street/Maiden Lane

On September 26, 2003 the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation issued a letter announcing that they have found the proposed John Street/Maiden Lane Historic District to be eligible for listing on the State and National Register. Eligibility allows for a Section 106 Review of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) proposed Fulton Street Transit Center.

The proposed John Street/Maiden Lane Historic District encompasses a strong collection of early skyscraper office buildings built by some of New York City’s most prominent 19th-century architects (such as Francis H. Kimball’s Corbin Building at 11 John Street) as well as a fine collection of early 20th-century office buildings which are complimentary to their older neighbors in size and scale (such as the Tyler Building at 17 John Street). The proposed district also includes 63 Nassau Street, an early commercial building attributed to James Bogardus, inventor of cast-iron building facades. This building is one of the few remaining Bogardus buildings still extant in New York.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the MTA New York City Transit are currently developing plans for the Fulton Street Transit Center in the vicinity of this historic neighborhood that will incorporate six existing subway stations. The Historic Districts Council has asked the MTA to be sensitive to the historic fabric of the John Street/Maiden Lane district in their plans for development. On October 3, 2003, it was announced that the MTA will work to preserve the Corbin Building and possibly incorporate it into the transit hub.
