| Raising a toast
to downtown’s future!
Join HDC for a benefit cocktail party to kick off our campaign
to preserve the John Street/Maiden Lane historic district! The proposed
district, located east of Broadway between Fulton and Liberty Streets
is a 60 building collection of late 19th and early 20th century
skyscrapers, and is currently under consideration for major developments.
While downtown needs re-investment to recover from the physical
and economic damage of the September 11th terrorist attacks, a rush
to redevelopment could potentially destroy dozens of viable historic
buildings and rob Lower Manhattan of its special character. Recognizing
the importance of this neighborhood, in November 2003 the Preservation
League of New York State named the district one of “New York
State’s Seven Most Endangered Historic Sites.”
The cocktail reception will be taking place on Wednesday, June 23rd
from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Liberty Tower at 55 Liberty Street, immediately
adjacent to the district. A 33-story building clad in white terra-cotta
over limestone, this former home to the Sinclair Oil Company was
one of the earliest residential conversions in lower Manhattan.
Architect and owner Joseph Pell Lombardi has graciously opened his
home, located on the 29th floor in the former board offices, for
the event.
Tickets for the evening cost $100 and reservations are required.
All major credit cards accepted.
