PRESERVING YOUR HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD

Designation as a New York City historic district is just one tool a community can use when working to preserve its historic neighborhood. Although historic district designation by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission provides strong protection against demolition and insensitive change, it can be a lengthy process. Moreover, New York City historic district designation does not always adequately address the wide range of problems and needs that many communities face. Therefore, when embarking on a campaign to preserve your neighborhood, you should be aware of all the resources and advocacy tools available for your community.

HDC has compiled resources to assist New York City residents in the protection of their neighborhoods. Use this section of our Web site to learn about how to gain designation on the local, state and national levels; how to advocate within your community and with your local officials; how to perform building research and surveys; and how zoning can help preserve your neighborhood.

In addition, HDC’s comprehensive manual, “Creating an Historic District,” is a practical guide to the Landmarks Law and the process of designation. With examples drawn from recent successful neighborhood preservation efforts, the guide counsels neighborhood leaders on the realities of the legal and political process.
